Frequently asked questions

How long does ISO 27001 certification realistically take?

For most mid-size organizations starting from a reasonable security baseline, 4–9 months to Stage 2 is realistic — longer if the ISMS needs to be built from scratch, shorter with experienced implementation support.

Can we exclude controls we don't think apply to us?

Yes — the Statement of Applicability lets you mark a control as not applicable, but it must be justified based on your actual risk assessment, not convenience. An auditor will test that justification.

Do we need external help, or can we do this ourselves?

Organizations with existing security maturity and a dedicated owner can self-implement; most benefit from experienced support at least for the gap assessment and SoA, where mistakes are expensive to discover late.
